T: Hello, everyone.
Today, let’s think about something important.

In Unit 6, we learned about the lives of children in Africa.
Some children don’t have clean drinking water.
Some children have to work, so they don’t have time to play.
It’s very difficult for them.

●アフリカの子どもたちを助けるスーパーパワーの文を一緒につくる

Now, look at this picture. （アフリカの子どもたちが水汲みをしている写真を見せる）

What are they doing? (生徒の答えを待つ）

Yes, the chidren in Africa are carrying water. Do you think it's an easy job? No, it's not easy. It's a very hard job.

Now, let's imagine. If you had a special power - a superpower -  to carry water, what would happen to the children?

Would  they have more time to play?  Okay, now let's make a sentence.

"If we had the power to carry water, children would have more time to play". 

Any other superpower? Can you think of? Let's think and share your ideas. (生徒の答えを待つ。でないようなら）

T: Then, if we had the power to make clean water, what would happen to the children?

S: Children would not have to carry it.

T: Yes! If we had the power to make clean water, children would not have to carry it. 

※ability は、能力や生まれつき・学習による技能、powerは非現実的・超自然的な力の話に主に使われる。ここでは、混乱しないよう、supernatural power (超自然的な力)の想像ということで、powerのみを使う。

If I had the power to stop child labor, children would be free to play and learn. 

If we had the power to give food, we would stop hunger.

If we had the power to make time to play, children would enjoy thier childhood.

If we had the power to teleport, we would bring children to safer places.

If we had the power to become invisible, children would be safer.

If we had the power to stop child labor, children could go to school.

【手順２】グループで３つ文をつくろう。(「If we had the power to 〜, children (they/ we) would 〜.」を使って、超自然的な力について3つの文を書きましょう。)

Write three sentences about supernatural powers. (useful sentence pattern: 黒板に書いてある)

Now, each group has three superpowers.

Talk in your group and choose your favorite one, the one you think it most useful for African children.

Then, rank the three powers: ① your favorite, ② second favorite, and ③ third favorite.

Now, let’s choose the best superpower in our class! 

Think: Which superpower is the most helpful for children in Africa? 

Let's decide the best superpower by voting. You can vote only once.

アフリカの現状を踏まえた適切な表現かどうかを吟味する必要があります。授業者は、子どもたちが直面している具体的な問題についてあらかじめいくつかの例を用意しておくと、スムーズに活動を進めることができ、無関係な内容を避けることにもつながります。
